The Grey Sun

It breaks through
The cloud-frozen snow
Alien, metallic, and shimmering
Bright upon the water
Seductive, blinding, even in reflection
Such an affirmation of fire
Such strength, such being
I am alive

Though the wind chill factor
Is twenty below zero
My eyes moisten to a tear
My cheeks redden to a flush
And my brow knits through sweat
We feel the heat of the Grey Sun
In a place too far North for Polar Bears
Too near Heaven to be Hell
In a place alien, metallic, and shimmering
We are alive, I am alive

Chukchi, Beaufort, East Siberia
These are the seas they have travelled
Feeling warmth on their faces
Light blinding, even in reflection
Such an affirmation, such strength
Such being, they are alive
We are alive, I am alive

So long as the Grey Sun
Beats down on the White Earth
The Black Sea will not consume us
